Colonization and Independence of Canada

The colonization of the New World caused significant changes to the lives of the indigenous peoples and the settlers. This unit examines the reasons colonization began, how it occurred, and the results of it. Every country currently in the Western Hemisphere has roots as an Old World Colony. The way change occurred from the status of a dependent colony to an independent nation varied.

This unit also explores the way Canada became independent, and the reasons that led to this change. Along with the other Colonization/Independence units, students will compare the colonization of Canada with the colonization of the United States and Latin America and the independence movement of Latin America.

This unit examines the reasons colonization began in Latin America, how it occurred, and the results of it. Every country currently in the Western Hemisphere has roots as an Old World Colony. The way change occurred from the status of a dependent colony to an independent nation varied. This unit also explores the way countries in Latin America became independent, and the reasons that led to this change. Along with the other Colonization/Independence units, this unit should be used to compare the colonization of The United States with the colonization and independence movements of Latin America and Canada.

Developing Geography Skills

Maps are an important tool for understanding where and how people live. In this unit students explore a variety of maps made for specific purposes. Knowing how to read a map, including the use of legend/key, scale, longitude and latitude, and compass rose will help students gather information.

Public Issues and Current Events

Students learn why it is important to be informed about current events. Learners explore the immediate and fundamental causes and impacts of current events. Students examine how perspective shapes the way people view current situations and how connections we make to the past help us understand the future. Students will consider how information can be gathered from many different media sources and formats. Different media comes from a variety of perspectives and should be evaluated for reliability.
