Reading Workshop

Across our district, our readers participate in reading workshop, read-alouds, small group instruction, independent reading and book clubs. Our goal is to create lifelong readers who are confident and independent. Students in all of our classrooms have access to a wide variety of high quality middle grade and young adult literature and have the opportunity to read a wide range of topics, authors, genres, and text. During reading workshop, students are taught explicit strategies to apply to their independent reading.

As part of reading workshop, students curate a variety of resources using digital tools to gather and share information, and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.

Seventh Grade Reading Workshop

Reading Units of Study may include:

  • Essential Research Skills: Seventh-grade readers will work collaboratively with a study group to build background knowledge and hone their note-taking skills. Students will use ethical research practices as they increase their internet literacy. Finally, readers will explore ways to turn their research into activism. 
  • Investigating Characterization: Author Study Book Clubs: Upper middle grade readers stretch to think beyond character and into characterization - understanding that characters are complex, and these complexities are revealed in moments or scenes, or through an author's techniques like perspective, point of view, and the management of time across a fiction text.
  • Historical Fiction Book Clubs: Upper middle grade readers analyze characters in historical fiction texts, including how characters respond to problems and how traits collide with the demands of an era.

Seventh grade readers could be reading fiction books like Elijah of Buxton, One Crazy Summer, Weedflower, When My Name was Keoko, The Crossover, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, Okay for Now, or Anything But Typical.

Seventh grade readers could be reading nonfiction texts like Irena's Children, Courage and Defiance, Lost in the Pacific, 1942, or A Place to Hide.
