K-4 GUIDANCE

School Counseling programs in MMUUSD support students in developing the 35 Mindsets and Behavior standards of the American School Counselor Association (see ASCA Mindsets and Behaviors). School Counselors teach these standards in guidance classes (K-4).

MINDSETS STANDARDS

  • The Mindset Standards are the psycho-social attitudes or beliefs that students have about themselves in relation to academic work. These standards are not taught in stand-alone lessons, but rather are embedded in and integrated with lessons on the Behavior Standards. The Mindset Standards include:
  • Belief in development of whole self, including a healthy balance of mental, social/emotional and physical well-being
  • Self-confidence in ability to succeed
  • Sense of belonging in the school environment
  • Understanding that postsecondary education and life-long learning are necessary for long-term career success
  • Belief in using abilities to their fullest to achieve high-quality results and outcomes
  • Positive attitude toward work and learning

BEHAVIOR STANDARDS

The Behavior Standards are visible, outwards signs that a student is engaged and putting forth effort to learn. These standards are divided into three sub-categories: learning strategies, self-management skills, and social skills.
