Grade 1 Reading Workshop

Reading Workshop

Across our district, our young readers participate in reading workshop, read-alouds, shared reading, explicit phonics instruction, small groups, guided reading, independent reading, and book clubs. Our goal is to create lifelong readers who are confident and independent. Students in all of our classrooms have access to a wide variety of choices of high quality children's literature and have the opportunity to read a wide range of topics, authors, and genres. During reading workshop, students are taught explicit strategies to apply to their independent reading.

As part of reading workshop, students curate a variety of resources using digital tools to gather and share information, and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.

First Grade Reading Workshop

Across the year, first graders will have access to all kinds of books to match the interests of your young reader. Students will have the opportunity to choose books they want to read, and will have time daily to practice reading and talking about books.

EXAMPLES OF FIRST GRADE UNITS OF STUDY INCLUDE:

  • Building Good Reading Habits:First graders practice applying multiple strategies to choose "just right" books, build up their reading volume and stamina, and understand the books they read.
  • Word Detectives: First graders learn strategies to solve trickier unfamiliar words in books they choose to read.
  • Learning About the World: First graders read nonfiction books to study topics of their choice.
  • Readers Have Big Jobs to Do:First graders learn strategies to help them hang on to the meaning in books that are longer and more complex than the books they were reading earlier in the year.
  • Meeting Characters and Learning Lessons: First graders study characters in their books closely, to notice character traits, character change, and lessons that characters learn.

Note that units will vary from classroom to classroom.
