Grade 2 Reading Workshop

Reading Workshop

Across our district, our young readers participate in reading workshop, read-alouds, shared reading, explicit phonics instruction, small groups, guided reading, independent reading, and book clubs. Our goal is to create lifelong readers who are confident and independent. Students in all of our classrooms have access to a wide variety of choices of high quality children's literature and have the opportunity to read a wide range of topics, authors, and genres. During reading workshop, students are taught explicit strategies to apply to their independent reading.

As part of reading workshop, students curate a variety of resources using digital tools to gather and share information, and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.

Second Grade Reading Workshop

In second grade, children often grow from the kind of readers who read very short little books, to the kind of readers who read and discuss longer and more challenging text--often reading many books in a series, or many books on a single topic. Student will have access to all kinds of books to match the interests of your young reader. Students will have the opportunity to choose books they want to read, and will have time daily to practice reading and talking about books.

EXAMPLES OF SECOND GRADE UNITS OF STUDY INCLUDE:

  • Second Grade Reading Growth Spurt: Second graders practice applying multiple strategies to choose "just right" books, build up their reading volume and stamina, and understand the books they read.
  • Becoming Nonfiction Experts:Second graders read nonfiction books to study topics of their choice.
  • Bigger Books Mean Amping Up Reading Power: Second graders learn strategies to help them hang on to the meaning in books that are longer and more complex than the books they were reading earlier in the year.
  • Series Book Clubs:Second graders choose a series of books to read and discuss in partnerships, small groups, or clubs.
  • Reading Nonfiction Cover to Cover: Book Clubs: Second graders read nonfiction books to study topics in partnerships, small groups, or clubs.
  • Reading and Role-Playing: Fairy Tales, Folktales , Fables, and Fantasy: Second graders read fairy tales, folktales, fables or fantasy stories to study authors' craft, and compare and contrast different stories.
