MMUUSD Names New Superintendent
Dr. John Muldoon to Succeed Dr. Alberghini Upon His Retirement in June
Mount Mansfield Unified Union School District (MMUUSD) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. John Muldoon as its next superintendent. Dr. Muldoon will assume the role following the retirement of Dr. John Alberghini in June.
Since 2021, Dr. Muldoon has served as the Assistant Superintendent of Maple Run Unified Union School District in St. Albans. Previously, he served as Principal of Shanghai American School in China, and held multiple leadership roles in Massachusetts, including Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction at Belmont High School and Middle School Assistant Principal in Melrose Public Schools.
“Dr. Muldoon stood out for his curiosity and communication skills, data-driven decision making and his strong commitment to student success,” said MMUUSD board chair, Edye Graning. “He has both a deep understanding of rural schools and communities, and a broad and innovative perspective on education due to his experience as an educator overseas. We could not be more pleased to welcome him to our district.”
With two years to prepare for Dr. Alberghini’s planned retirement, the district engaged in an extensive selection process, led by the nationally renowned search consultants Human Capital Enterprises. MMUUSD staff, administrators, directors, and members of the community worked collaboratively to develop the search criteria and interview applicants. Interest in the role was strong, with candidates applying from across the country.
In the coming months, Dr. Muldoon will work closely with Dr. Alberghini, the MMUUSD board, administrators, and staff to ensure a seamless transition. Opportunities for the community to meet Dr. Muldoon will be announced later this spring.
"Vermont schools face unprecedented challenges, but MMUUSD is positioned to navigate them with strength,” said Muldoon. “With dedicated staff, strong systems, and a community that puts kids first, the district embraces innovation and continuous improvement. Everyone I’ve met has wowed me with their kindness, expertise, and commitment to students. I’m honored by the opportunity to join this incredible team and help shape its bright future."
"On behalf of the MMUUSD board and the entire community, I would like to thank Dr. John Alberghini for his twenty-three years of dedicated service. John has been an exceptional leader who has made a transformative impact on our schools. We wish him the very best in retirement and will miss him dearly."
Dr. Muldoon holds a doctorate in Organizational Leadership from Northeastern University. He earned his M.A. at Salem State and his undergraduate degree at Merrimack College.
Muldoon grew up in Southern New Hampshire and currently resides with his wife, four-year-old daughter, and dog in Stowe. His first official day with the district is July 1, 2025.
