The snow and cold weather has arrived in Vermont. As we anticipate challenging weather over the next few months, please know that while changing the school schedule is never an easy call, the primary factor is always student safety.
How the Decision is Made
5:00 AM
Road Assessment: The Superintendent contacts the Transportation Supervisor, who communicates with road crews throughout MMUUSD to determine if roads are passable. We also monitor local and national weather patterns.
5:30 AM
The Decision: Based on updated road reports and weather predictions, a decision is made to close, delay, or open school.
NOTIFY
Communication: Alerts are sent via the District notification system (email/phone), posted on school websites, and broadcast on local radio and TV.
Safety Criteria Checklist
Before opening school, I must be reasonably sure of the following:
✓ Roads/highways are safely passable.
✓ Buses can travel safely.
✓ Power is available to the schools.
✓ Pedestrians can walk safely to/from school.
✓ Emergency exits can be cleared.
✓ Temperatures do not present severe risk.
Possible Schedule Changes
90-Minute Delay
School opens and buses pick up students 90 minutes later than the regular scheduled time.
2-Hour Delay
School opens and buses pick up students 2 hours later than the regular scheduled time.
School Closed
All classes and school activities are cancelled for the day.
🚗 A Note for Teen Drivers & Parents
We have particular concern for the welfare of our teenage drivers. Icy and snow-covered roads are a challenge for any driver. Please be very deliberate before allowing a young driver to leave for school in inclement weather.
If school is in session but you feel conditions are unsafe, you always have the freedom to keep your child home for the day.
Regarding Early Dismissal: If we open school, we seldom close early. Local and state road crews need the roads clear of buses to service them effectively during a storm. We also recognize that early closing presents significant childcare challenges for families.
My hope is to hold school on schedule throughout the winter months.
